Davis Applied Technology College Announces New Name and Logo
Davis Applied Technology College (DATC) is getting technical. On July 1, DATC’s name will change from Davis Applied Technology College to Davis Technical College (Davis Tech).
Senate Bill 238, sponsored by Senators Ann Millner and Brad Wilson and passed by the Utah Legislature earlier this year, changed the name of the Utah College of Applied Technology, Davis Tech’s governing body, to the Utah System of Technical Colleges. The bill also renamed all eight applied technology colleges as technical colleges.
“Davis Tech’s name change reflects a national trend,” says Michael J. Bouwhuis, Davis Technical College president. “When Davis Tech started out as Davis Area Vocational Center in 1978, we provided vocational training. We have consistently upgraded our curriculum to embrace the latest advances in technology and industrial demand for highly skilled employees. As a result, the skills we teach today are highly technical. Senator Millner’s bill will establish the College as a nationally recognized institution of technical learning.”
Along with the new name and accompanying logo, Davis Technical College will also make major curriculum changes. Five new programs will accept students, beginning July 2017. The new programs are:
- Hair Designer
- Radiology Practical Technology
- Robotics Technology
- Software Development
Two programs will change their names to align with industrial and curricular changes. These are:
- Business Administrative Services (formerly Business Technology)
- Cybersecurity (formerly Information Technology)
Eight other programs will either increase or decrease instruction time.
Davis Technical College’s new logo, incorporating aspects of the College’s history and its new branding, can be downloaded at davistech.edu/media. Likewise, the College’s URL has changed to davistech.edu.
In addition to the new programs, Davis Technical College will continue training students in its 30 other programs.
As Davis Applied Technology College become Davis Technical College on July 1, it will become better aligned with its mission: “We are a trusted learning community embracing technical education to promote student development and economic growth.” The changes to Davis Technical College’s name and curriculum will also create new opportunities to clearly communicate the College’s purpose to the students and publics it serves.
